About this position
The Cyprus Institute is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Soil Erosion (ref. EEWRC_PDF_26_02) within the Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre (EEWRC), based at the Athalassas Campus in Nicosia, Cyprus.
This full-time postdoctoral position sits in the Water Department and is part of the Horizon Europe EUROSION project (European Soil Erosion Monitoring and Modelling Network for Sustainable Agricultural Land Management), a collaboration of 24 partners from EU and associated countries coordinated by Wageningen University. The project focuses on establishing long-term wind and water erosion monitoring nodes in Cyprus, with a strong field- and data-intensive research component.
The successful researcher will contribute to the installation and maintenance of a runoff and suspended sediment sampling station in a mountain catchment, as well as a wind erosion monitoring site in an agricultural plain. Responsibilities include sampling and analysing soil and vegetation characteristics, participating in drone surveys and processing 3D data, collecting and analysing dust samples using MWAC samplers, and maintaining automated erosion and meteorological equipment while analysing the resulting data.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Earth, Environmental or Agricultural Sciences or a related field. The role requires proven experience in wind or water erosion field research, experience with dataloggers and environmental sensors, soil laboratory analysis skills, excellent programming ability in Python or R, strong analytical and organisational skills, and a driver’s license. Preferred experience includes drone survey work, digital surface model construction, Agisoft Megashape (or similar) software, and satellite-based image processing.
The appointment is for an initial period of 24 months, with the possibility of renewal depending on performance and availability of funds. The post is funded through Horizon Europe, and the salary band is CYI4, with a starting salary ranging from €37,688.69 to €43,142.58 depending on step. Additional benefits include flexible and remote work options, additional paid leave, provident fund membership, and group medical and life insurance.
Applications must be submitted via The Cyprus Institute Exelsys Platform using the provided application link. Candidates should upload a curriculum vitae, a short letter of interest/vision statement, a list of publications or work portfolio, and contact details for two referees. All documents must be in English and in PDF format. Applications are reviewed until the announcement is closed; the deadline is 24 September 2026.
