About this position
North-West University’s Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management (UESM) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Water Quality Modelling, based in Potchefstroom.
The project focuses on water quality, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental science, water resources management, geoinformatics, GIS, and related research areas. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Seifu Kebede Gurmessa and contribute to water-quality data analysis, GIS-based spatial analysis, national water resources accounting, and method development.
Key responsibilities include developing methods to integrate water quality into the national water resources accounting framework, identifying and managing water-quality, surface-water, and groundwater datasets, selecting appropriate indicators for national-scale accounting, producing GIS-based analyses and mapping outputs, quantifying impacts on water availability, and contributing to technical reports, maps, presentations, and methodological guidance documents.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD in one of the listed fields or a related discipline, demonstrated experience in water-quality data analysis, strong hands-on GIS and spatial analysis skills, the ability to work with large environmental datasets, and the ability to develop methods rather than only apply existing tools.
The appointment is for 1 year and the post offers a stipend of R243 478 per annum (tax inclusive). The post is funded through WRC-UKZN funding.
Deadline: 17 August 2026. Appointment date: 11 February 2027.
