About this position

Arizona State University’s Center on Information and Narrative Complexity (CINC) is inviting applications for a full-time postdoctoral research scholar at the Tempe Campus. This position sits within a funded grant project focused on computational social science, data science, complex systems, communication studies, natural language processing, and large language models for studying narratives, belief dynamics, and information environments.

The project develops an AI-powered framework to uncover the narratives that make messages resonate with different audiences and to measure how communications align with an audience’s worldview. The work aims to build a Narrative Codex Framework (NCF) that can decode narratives driving influence campaigns and support more effective, narrative-aligned communication strategies for human review.

Responsibilities include developing and analyzing computational and social systems from behavioral, societal, and human-centered perspectives; co-developing NCF methods with software engineers, data scientists, and social scientists; building scalable and reproducible model/data pipelines; and helping transition research methods into a robust, deployable framework. The role also includes co-mentoring students and research scientists.

Minimum qualifications: an earned doctorate completed by the time of appointment in computational social science, data science, complex systems, computer science, or a closely related field; programming experience in Python, R, or similar; basic data analysis skills; and interest or experience in modeling belief dynamics, information environments, communication, or narrative analysis. Desired qualifications include complex systems experience, interdisciplinary collaboration, familiarity with LLMs or NLP beyond prompt engineering, and interest in defense and intelligence applications.

Applications must be submitted electronically through Interfolio. Required materials are a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references; optional materials include a research statement and two or more peer-reviewed publications. The initial deadline is 2026-09-16, and applications may continue to be reviewed on a rolling reserve-pool basis until the position is filled.
