About this position

Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Spatial Lineage Tracing and Single-Cell Multiomics at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB), London, United Kingdom.

This is a 3-year fixed-term, full-time postdoctoral opening focused on developing and applying new methods in single-cell genomics, spatial genomics, lineage tracing, DNA methylation, and high-throughput sequencing analysis. The Tissue Biology Group is building technologies to read cellular history from somatic mutations and DNA methylation while preserving spatial context in tissue. The work builds on the Slide-tags platform and aims to resolve cell lineage in situ and study clonal dynamics in human tissues.

The role is a mixed wet/dry laboratory position. The successful candidate will generate data at the bench, develop and benchmark experimental and computational methods, and take primary responsibility for analysis of large single-cell and spatial sequencing datasets. Applications of the method may extend to development, ageing, cancer, and environmental exposure.

Required background: PhD or equivalent experience in genomics, molecular biology, computational biology, bioengineering, or a closely related field; hands-on molecular biology experience; experience with high-throughput sequencing data; and strong ability in either experimental genomics or computational analysis, with aptitude for the other. Programming in R and/or Python is required or expected to be acquired quickly.

Desirable experience: single-cell or spatial library preparation, DNA methylation sequencing, microfluidics or droplet/capsule assays, tissue handling, cryosectioning, immunofluorescence, FACS, HPC environments, and reproducible workflows.

Funding: salary £42,694 plus London allowance £5,560 per year, plus additional settlement and training allowances. Deadline: 25 October 2026. Applicants should submit a two-page CV, a brief cover letter, and two scientific references via the online portal.

What's required

A PhD or equivalent experience in genomics, molecular biology, computational biology, bioengineering, or a closely related discipline is essential. Candidates should have evidence of the ability to plan and carry out a research project, hands-on wet-lab molecular biology experience, and experience generating or analysing high-throughput sequencing data. Strong ability in either experimental genomics or computational analysis is essential, with clear aptitude for the other. Programming in R and/or Python for sequencing analysis is required or should be quickly acquirable. Desirable experience includes single-cell or spatial genomics library preparation, DNA methylation sequencing, microfluidics or droplet/capsule assay development, tissue handling, cryosectioning, immunofluorescence, FACS, HPC environments, reproducible workflows, lineage tracing, clonal dynamics, and somatic mutation analysis. Excellent written and verbal English communication, collaboration, and the ability to work independently are expected.

How to apply

Submit a maximum two-page CV, a brief cover letter describing scientific interests and motivation, and the names and contacts of two scientific references through the application portal before the closing date. Applications may be reviewed by both LMS and Imperial staff.
