About this position

The Microbial Ecology Group at the Institute of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to work on cellular dormancy (quiescence) in eukaryotic microorganisms, especially baker’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae).

This project focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that generate phenotypic variability in quiescent cell populations and how this variability affects adaptation, antifungal resistance, and population dynamics. The successful candidate will help establish, develop, and apply single-cell analysis approaches to study quiescence across both individual-cell and population scales.

The role is based in a vibrant international research environment with access to modern microscopy and microfluidic platforms, state-of-the-art equipment, mentorship, and support for professional development. The appointment is a full-time temporary contract, initially for 12 months and potentially extendable to 20 months.

Funding includes a salary of 11,049–13,481 PLN gross per month plus a 3–20% seniority allowance, conference funding, and additional social benefits. The post also offers opportunities to collaborate with recognized scientists and to develop an independent early-career research profile.

Eligibility highlights include a doctoral degree in biology, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or a related field; compliance with NCN postdoctoral rules; strong English skills; documented scientific achievements; experience with microscopy and single-cell analysis; programming and R skills; and a willingness to carry out data stewardship in line with FAIR principles. Candidates should also be prepared to contribute to image analysis, statistical analysis, student mentoring, and international collaboration.

The application deadline is 14 September 2026, and the expected starting date is 1 December 2026. Applications should be submitted by email to the contact person, Dr. hab. Dominika Włoch-Salamon, Prof. UJ.
