About this position
Postdoctoral opportunity at the University of Warsaw, Biological and Chemical Research Centre, within the OPUS 24 project “Together or not? The relevance of the interplay of staphylocoagulase and staphylokinase in the development of Staphylococcus aureus infections”. The position is led by Marta Zapotoczna, PhD, and is designed for a computational biologist interested in bacterial genomics, bioinformatics, and multidimensional biological data analysis.
The project focuses on how Staphylococcus aureus coagulases (staphylocoagulase and von Willebrand factor-binding protein) and staphylokinase influence fibrin clot formation, immune evasion, infection progression, and bacteraemia complications. The research has expanded to include integration of genomic, phenotypic, and clinical data, with bacterial genome analysis, phylogenetics, virulence-gene and regulatory variation, and genotype–phenotype–clinical outcome associations.
The successful candidate will design and conduct computational analyses, including modelling protein–protein and protein–small-molecule interactions, help develop and optimise analytical pipelines, and contribute to scientific supervision and mentoring of Master’s and doctoral students. The role also includes manuscript preparation, conference presentations, team meetings, and international collaboration.
This is a full-time temporary postdoctoral position for 12 months, with an expected start in October/November 2026. The post is funded by the National Science Centre under OPUS 24, with remuneration of approximately PLN 8000–8800 gross per month plus additional annual remuneration and an allowance for years of service. Two positions are available.
Applicants should hold a PhD in biological sciences, bioinformatics, chemistry, biology, or a related field, and should have at least three years of research experience in computational biology and/or bioinformatics, strong experience with large datasets, and a publication record appropriate to career stage. A doctoral degree in biological sciences, bioinformatics, chemistry, biology, or a related discipline is required, with the PhD awarded either in the year of employment or within the 12 years preceding 1 January of the year of employment. Candidates must have at least three years of research experience in computational biology and/or bioinformatics, experience managing large datasets, experience independently planning and conducting scientific research, a scientific track record appropriate to career stage with publications in peer-reviewed journals, scientific independence, strong organisational skills, ability to work effectively in a team and interdisciplinary environment, willingness to acquire new knowledge and further develop research competencies, and very good written and spoken English.
