About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher for SNF-funded StrOntEx and MetaboLinkAI projects at the Idiap Research Institute in Martigny, Switzerland.

The Human-Centred Health AI research group at Idiap develops artificial intelligence methods across the molecular, individual, and societal scales of health. This postdoctoral role sits within the group’s AI for Biomolecules agenda and focuses on two SNF-funded initiatives: StrOntEx and MetaboLinkAI. The project combines computational methods, chemical language models, and metabolomics to support biological interpretation and explainability.

The successful candidate will work on advanced AI approaches to augment and explain chemical language models and to biologically interpret metabolomics datasets. Responsibilities include methods development for model explainability, training and evaluating AI models for functional interpretation of metabolomics, collaboration with national and international partners, supervision of junior researchers, empirical investigation, scientific writing and reviewing, and teaching/outreach activities. The position is full-time, on-site, and fixed-term for 2.5 years.

Required background includes a recent PhD in computer science, computational biology, or another related quantitative discipline. The post is highly interdisciplinary and seeks applicants with deep biological knowledge in natural products and metabolism, experience with biological ontologies and pathway resources, and the ability to evaluate sparse biological data in meaningful ways. Strong programming skills in Python and Rust are expected, together with experience fine-tuning large AI models for domain-specific tasks and a track record of open-source or publicly available research code. Excellent written and verbal English, strong communication, good organisation, and a motivation for academic research are also important.

Idiap Research Institute is a research institute of national importance in artificial intelligence, offering a dynamic, multicultural environment and competitive employment conditions. The institute is located in Martigny, Valais, in the south of Switzerland. The location and surrounding region offer a high quality of life, outdoor activities, and a strong research setting. The post is funded through the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) rather than an EU programme.

Application review begins on 28 August 2026, and the deadline is 3 September 2026 at 11:59 Europe/Zurich. Candidates should apply via the Idiap careers page.
