About this position

The Chair of Forest Resources Management (FORM) at ETH Zurich is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher in Forest Management and Economics. This is an opportunity for an independent and motivated researcher who wants to work at the interface of forest science, economics, teaching, and applied decision-making.

The FORM group is an interdisciplinary team at ETH Zurich focused on understanding, monitoring, modelling, and managing forests for the future. Its research spans forest ecology, forest management, remote sensing, decision support, risk analysis, economics, and stakeholder-oriented approaches. The group is also closely involved in teaching within the Department of Environmental Systems Science (D-USYS), contributing to courses and student projects in forest resources management, forest and landscape planning, forest economics, applied decision-making, and sustainable landscape management.

The successful candidate will develop their own research ideas within the wider theme of forest management and economics, with possible links to remote sensing, decision support, and related areas. Responsibilities include acquiring, cleaning, analysing, and interpreting data; preparing scientific manuscripts and other outputs; presenting work at conferences; and actively contributing to new research proposals and funding applications. The postdoctoral researcher may serve as a PI, collaborator, or partner on project proposals and is expected to help turn promising ideas into funded projects.

Teaching is an important part of the position. The role includes contributing to existing and new Bachelor’s and Master’s courses in Forest and Landscape Management, particularly Forest Economics. The postdoc will also supervise student projects, helping students formulate questions, choose methods, work with data, apply statistical approaches, and improve their writing. In addition, the role involves supporting workshops, meetings, events, and other group activities, while strengthening scientific and professional networks.

Applicants must hold a PhD in forestry, forest sciences, forest economics, environmental sciences with a major in forest and landscape management, or a closely related field. A strong interest in forest management and economics is essential, along with experience in developing research ideas, analysing data, publishing scientific work, and communicating with varied audiences. Very good English skills are required, and German is an asset, especially for teaching and exchange with Swiss practice partners. Experience in university teaching, thesis supervision, course development, or applied educational formats is desirable. The group values initiative, independence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and a constructive, student-focused approach.

The appointment is offered initially for 3 years on annual contracts, with the possibility of extension up to 6 years depending on performance and funding availability. ETH Zurich emphasizes diversity, sustainability, and an inclusive academic environment. Applications must be submitted online and should include a motivation letter, CV, relevant degree certificates and transcripts, a publication list, and contact details for three referees. Review of applications starts on 2026-08-15 and the position remains open until filled.
