About this position

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, France, is advertising an immediate opening for a two-year postdoctoral position in Advanced Materials Characterization. The project is hosted by the Diffraction Group and is carried out in collaboration with the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), with funding provided through the Spanish Scientific Member agreement.

This research targets emergent phenomena in transition metal oxides, including frustrated magnetic systems, non-collinear magnets, complex ferrites with chiral states, and frustrated negative charge-transfer oxides with hidden symmetries. The scientific goal is to improve the understanding and control of emergent states in quantum materials relevant to magnetoelectric and spin-lattice-driven applications.

The work is centered on neutron techniques, especially single-crystal neutron diffraction, polarized neutrons, and polarization analysis. Complementary methods such as resonant X-ray scattering (RMXS/RIXS), X-ray diffraction, and spectroscopy may also be used. The role is highly interdisciplinary, connecting solid-state physics, materials chemistry, and advanced characterization using large-scale research facilities.

The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to materials synthesis and preparation, design and submit beamtime proposals, collaborate with partner laboratories in Barcelona and Madrid, analyze and interpret data with modern software tools, and disseminate results through publications and conference presentations. Travel to European neutron and synchrotron sources is expected as part of the project.
