About this position
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Agroecosystem Modelling and Digital Twins at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3). The role sits within the PhenoRob2 Core Project 6 and focuses on developing field- and farm-scale agroecosystem digital twins.
The research combines agroecosystem modelling, hydrological modelling, environmental modelling, data assimilation, and scientific computing. Main tasks include further developing the AgroC model, integrating it with PDAF, building observation operators, and creating workflows that incorporate near-real-time observations of crop growth, crop stress, hydrological states, fluxes, and nutrient dynamics. The position also involves data-driven, surrogate, and hybrid modelling approaches, plus application of digital twins at selected experimental sites.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree followed by a PhD in environmental sciences, geosciences, agricultural sciences, computational sciences, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field. Strong programming skills in Python and/or Fortran are expected, along with experience in process-based models and/or model-data fusion. Linux/UNIX scientific computing experience is required, and parallel/HPC experience is an advantage. Excellent English at C1 level is required; German is optional but helpful.
This is a postdoctoral staff position with remuneration at EG 13 TVöD-Bund. The contract is limited until 31.12.2030. The workplace is in Jülich, Germany. No fixed application deadline is given; the position remains open until filled.
