About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher opportunity at Birkbeck, University of London in the School of Social Sciences, working on the AHRC-DFG funded project Forging And Belonging (FABRIC).

The project investigates how the changing value of craft in Senegal and Benin shapes social belonging and imagined futures among teenagers in craft families. The research draws on ethnographic data collected from families in three villages in each country, including participant ethnographies with potters, weavers, and blacksmiths, qualitative interviews, and future-me workshops with children in craft families.

The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with the co-investigators on analysing the ethnographic material and writing research outputs. This is a research-intensive role suited to candidates with training in anthropology, sociology, or archaeology, and with knowledge of West African culture and society. Experience in the anthropology or sociology of material culture is especially relevant. Fluency in French and Wolof or Baatonum is ideally sought.

The position is part-time (21 hours per week), fixed-term for 11.5 months, and requires the successful applicant to be based in the UK with at least one day per week in the office. Salary is £27,079 to £30,832 per annum pro rata.

Deadline: 30 October 2026. Interviews are scheduled for 13 November 2026.

Apply via the university recruitment portal. Informal enquiries may be directed to Karen Wells (Professor, International Development and Childhood Studies; PI FABRIC) at [email protected].
