About this position

IMDEA Energy Institute is offering a postdoctoral researcher position in artificial intelligence, hybrid modelling, and digital twins for small modular reactors (SMRs). The position is part of an interdisciplinary research line between the Artificial Intelligence Unit and the Nuclear Technologies Unit, focused on applying AI techniques to model, simulate, predict, optimize, and evaluate SMR systems.

The successful candidate will work on scientific modeling of physical systems and AI-driven approaches for nuclear energy applications. The project begins with simplified models and simulated data, then evolves toward more complex models and experimental data from research and industrial collaborators in the nuclear sector. Core topics include hybrid physical-data models, digital twins, surrogate models, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, uncertainty quantification, and explainable AI.

Key tasks include reviewing the state of the art in physical, data-based, and hybrid models for nuclear systems; selecting AI methodologies and base physical models such as neutronics and thermal-hydraulics; designing hybrid models and digital twin architectures; developing machine learning models to accelerate simulations; generating and validating databases from simulated and experimental data; and contributing to project proposals, deliverables, publications, and conference presentations.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in AI, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a related engineering field with strong computational modeling; proven experience in scientific modeling/simulation/control of complex nonlinear dynamical systems; proven experience in AI and data-based modeling; and strong Python programming skills. Additional desirable experience includes nuclear energy, reactor safety, Modelica/OpenFOAM/OpenMC/COMSOL/ANSYS, cloud or GPU computing, and software engineering best practices.

Funding and conditions: salary is between 40,000€ and 44,000€ per year, depending on qualification and expertise, with Spanish Public Health and Social Security benefits. The workplace is IMDEA Energía, Móstoles, Madrid.

Application deadline: 2026-09-24. Required documents include a PhD certificate, relevant scientific publications, and a motivation letter. Apply via the application form on the job page.
