About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in biomechanics and crocodile locomotion at the University of London, based in person at Hawkshead Campus near Potters Bar, Hertfordshire, UK.

This is a 36-month, full-time fixed-term postdoctoral position in the Structure & Motion Lab, Department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. The project investigates the evolution of locomotion in the crocodile lineage using 3D anatomical imaging, scan data from extant and extinct crocodiles, in vivo (non-invasive) and ex vivo (donated cadaver tissue) experiments, and robotics-based empirical data collection.

The role is part of an ERC-funded project through the EU Horizon 2020 programme and is led by Professor John R. Hutchinson. The successful candidate will work with collaborators, another postdoc, a technician, and a research administrator, and will contribute to all stages of the research, including data collection, analysis, Good Research Practice, and Health & Safety.

Required background: a PhD-level degree and strong experience in biomechanics empirical data collection (in vivo and/or ex vivo; robotics). Desirable expertise includes 3D imaging/modelling, biomechanical modelling/simulation, statistics, morphometrics, phylogenetic comparative methods, anatomy/dissection, vertebrate palaeontology, and science communication.

Funding and benefits: the post is funded by the ERC; the advert also notes a generous reward package, pension, family-friendly policies, on-site café and restaurant, free fitness centre membership, cycle-to-work scheme, and free mini-bus service. Visa sponsorship may be possible for eligible candidates.

How to apply: follow the vacancy link to the employer application page. Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor John Hutchinson at [email protected].
