About this position
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is hiring a Postdoctoral Researcher in computational materials science within the Actinide and Lanthanide Science group in the Materials Science Division.
The project focuses on the discovery of new structural alloys for extreme environments, with research spanning alloy design, CALPHAD, thermodynamic and kinetic databases, microstructure evolution, Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), uncertainty quantification, and numerical optimization. The role also includes integrating analytical and machine-learning surrogate models into LLNL’s Materials Acceleration Platform on high-performance computing infrastructure.
Applicants should have a PhD in materials science, metallurgy, condensed matter physics, applied math, or a closely related field. The posting asks for experience in at least three of the following: CALPHAD, microstructure and property modeling, uncertainty quantification and propagation, ICME, alloy design, and design of experiments. It also seeks experience with scientific research software and computational thermodynamics tools such as Thermo-Calc, Pandat, FactSage, PyCalphad, Thermochimica, or OpenCalphad.
Additional desirable experience includes AI/ML methods, Bayesian or other optimization algorithms, numerical methods for phase transformations and microstructure evolution, and alloy synthesis, processing, or characterization. The position requires eligibility for a DOE Q-level security clearance, which means U.S. citizenship is required.
This is a postdoctoral appointment with a salary of $123,048 annually and may be extended up to three years. Benefits mentioned include relocation assistance, education reimbursement, and a flexible benefits package.
