About this position

Los Alamos National Laboratory is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Computational Subsurface Hydrology and Energy Systems within the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division, specifically the CHESS (Computational Hydrogeology and Energy Systems in the Subsurface) team.

This postdoctoral opening focuses on computational subsurface hydrology, subsurface flow and transport modeling, reactive geochemistry, machine learning, and related geoscience/HPC methods. Research directions may include discrete fracture network (DFN) modeling with dfnWorks, coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) simulation, single- and multiphase flow in fractured and porous media using FEHM, carbon mineralization and reactive transport, and machine learning/foundation models for subsurface energy systems.

The position is based onsite in Los Alamos, New Mexico, United States. The appointment is initially for two years and may be renewed for a third year. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, and outstanding candidates may be eligible for LANL Director’s Fellowship or named fellowships.

Eligibility highlights: a Ph.D. in Computational Hydrology, Applied Mathematics, Computational Physics, Geological Engineering, or a related field is required; all Ph.D. requirements must be completed by the start date; applicants should be within 5 years of Ph.D. completion. Strong programming and research software skills are expected, including Fortran, C++, Python, or Julia, plus modern software engineering practices in research or HPC settings. Excellent English communication and publication potential are also required. Desired experience includes THMC simulation, DFN modeling, computational geochemistry, HPC/MPI/GPU workflows, uncertainty quantification, machine learning for geoscience, and visualization tools such as ParaView, VisIt, or EarthVision.

How to apply: submit an online application with a CV and a one-page cover letter. The cover letter should include a short biography, research interests, future career goals, and a clear statement addressing the minimum and desired qualifications. Questions may be directed to Dr. J. D. Hyman at [email protected].
