About this position

Postdoctoral research opportunity at the GeoHydrodynamics and Environment Research group (GHER), University of Liège, Belgium.

This position is for a project scientist / post-doc within the Department of Astrophysics, Geophysics and Oceanography at the University of Liège. The successful candidate will join the GHER team and contribute to the EU Horizon Europe project COMEDI, which brings together 11 leading partners working at the intersection of data assimilation and deep learning.

The research focus is on developing and adapting assimilation schemes based on generative deep learning methods, including flow matching and diffusion models. The role is well suited to candidates with interests in geosciences, oceanography, atmospheric science, and computational methods for environmental and Earth system applications.

Applicants should have a PhD in physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, computer vision, engineering, or a related field. Prior experience in data assimilation and/or deep learning is expected, along with strong scientific programming skills in Julia, Python, Fortran, or C/C++. Good English communication skills are required for international collaboration.

The contract duration is 3 years, with a tentative start date of 1 January 2027. The position is full-time and temporary, and it is explicitly linked to a scientific mobility programme: applicants must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 24 months during the three years before the start date, excluding short stays such as vacations or conference travel.

The position is subject to a mobility rule: candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 24 months during the three years immediately preceding the contract start date.
