About this position

ETH Zurich’s D-ITET PBL group is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in embedded hardware, FPGA, Edge AI, smart sensors, TinyML, and embedded systems. The group works on hands-on research and teaching across embedded systems, FPGA-based systems, electronics, signal processing, machine learning on microcontrollers, autonomous robots, and drones.

The role is strongly hardware-oriented and is intended for candidates who can take a prototype from concept to a complete working embedded hardware/software system. The successful applicant will contribute to research, teaching, student supervision, laboratory development, project coordination, and fundraising. Teaching duties include embedded systems, FPGA design, electronics, machine learning on microcontrollers, laboratory exercises, and supervision of Bachelor, Master, and PhD projects.

Research interests highlighted in the post include FPGA design and HDL development, PCB design and board bring-up, sensor and processor integration, embedded C/C++, real-time signal processing, hardware-aware AI, and deployment of machine-learning models on resource-constrained hardware. The group is especially interested in candidates with experience or strong interest in Edge AI, TinyML, embedded machine learning, neuromorphic computing, or signal processing.

Applicants should hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field and provide clear evidence of several relevant hands-on topics. The post specifically asks for evidence of at least 5–6 areas such as FPGA development, embedded system debugging, PCB design, embedded programming, sensor integration, publication record in related areas, teaching interest, and European project coordination. The ideal candidate will have defended the PhD within the past two years and should ideally not have spent more than 3 years in fixed-term academic employment at ETH Zurich or EPFL.

The position is based at ETH Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland, and is fixed-term at 80%–100%. No deadline is stated in the post. Applications must be submitted online and should include a CV and motivation letter. The motivation letter should briefly describe two hardware systems personally designed and implemented, including the applicant’s contribution, the processors/FPGAs/sensors used, and the resulting prototype.

Questions about the position can be directed to Michele Magno at [email protected].

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. A strong hands-on embedded hardware background is essential, including several of: FPGA/HDL design, complete embedded system development, PCB schematic and layout, board bring-up and debugging, sensor/MCU/SoC integration, embedded C/C++ programming, real-time signal processing, hardware-aware AI, and use of hardware debugging tools. Candidates should also have experience or strong interest in Edge AI, TinyML, embedded machine learning, neuromorphic computing, or signal processing. Clear evidence of at least 5-6 listed topics is expected. The ideal candidate will have defended the PhD within the past two years and ideally not spent more than 3 years in fixed-term academic employment at ETH Zurich or EPFL. Applications focused mainly on software, data science, or machine learning without embedded hardware experience will not be considered.

How to apply

Prepare a CV and motivation letter, including brief descriptions of two hardware systems you personally designed and implemented. Submit the application only through the online application portal; email or postal applications are not accepted. Direct questions about the position to Michele Magno at [email protected].
