About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher opportunity in Neuroscience, neuroimaging, fMRI, 7T MRI, laminar imaging, memory, and Alzheimer's disease at the Deutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE) in Magdeburg, Germany.

The position is embedded in the DFG Research Unit Layers of Memory (subproject P7) and the Clinical Cognitive Neuroscience group led by Dr David Berron. The project investigates how the brain segments continuous experience into meaningful events, with a focus on hippocampal and medial temporal lobe mechanisms, cortical layers, and how early Alzheimer's pathology disrupts these processes.

Research tasks include acquiring and analyzing naturalistic movie-based 7T laminar fMRI data, segmenting MTL subregions and hippocampal subfields, defining cortical layer compartments, and applying univariate and multivariate analyses including representational similarity analysis. The work compares young adults, cognitively healthy older adults, and people in early stages of Alzheimer's disease recruited in Magdeburg and Essen.

The environment includes access to state-of-the-art infrastructure such as 7T scanners, 3T MRI, and PET, plus collaboration with a multi-site consortium spanning Bochum, Bonn, Dortmund, Duisburg-Essen, Magdeburg, Tübingen, the Netherlands, and Austria. The post offers close supervision, regular lab meetings, journal club, and opportunities to present at international conferences and publish manuscripts.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroscience, or a related field; strong interest in neuropsychology and translational memory research; experience with (f)MRI analysis; programming in R/Python/MATLAB; familiarity with multivariate methods; strong communication skills; and a publication track record. German is helpful but not required.

Application materials requested: CV, short motivation letter, and two references. Contact Dr David Berron at [email protected] for further information. Deadline: 13 October 2026.

Funding details

What's required

PhD in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroscience, or a related field. Strong interest in neuroimaging and neuropsychology, especially the neural basis of memory and cognitive impairment in early-stage neurodegenerative disease. Experience with (f)MRI data analysis is expected; prior ultra-high-field 7T or laminar imaging experience is a strong plus. Experience with medial temporal lobe/hippocampal subfield anatomy and segmentation is desirable, or willingness to learn quickly. Strong programming skills in R, Python and/or MATLAB and familiarity with multivariate methods such as RSA are required. Good communication skills, ability to work in a local and distributed multi-site team, peer-reviewed publications, and fluent written/spoken English are expected; German is a strong plus but not required.
