About this position
ETH Zurich is advertising a Postdoctoral Researcher position in experimental fracture mechanics of soft materials at the Professorship of Solid Mechanics (SMEC) in the Institute for Building Materials. The project sits at the intersection of materials science, mechanics, and physics, with a strong emphasis on understanding how materials deform, degrade, crack, and fail.
The successful candidate will join a newly established fracture mechanics imaging and characterization lab and will lead experimental research on advanced materials, including soft materials and architected materials. The work involves advanced imaging and quantitative measurement methods such as confocal imaging, high-speed imaging, digital image correlation (DIC), and particle tracking to study crack-tip deformation, fracture energy, rate-dependent behavior, interfacial contact, deformation, and friction.
The position is highly interdisciplinary and offers close collaboration with researchers working on numerical modeling, theoretical analysis, and soft materials. The lab provides mechanical testing systems, 3D-printing facilities, and advanced imaging equipment, with access to additional optical/high-speed imaging and scientific computing resources at ETH Zurich.
Eligibility highlights: a doctoral degree in mechanics, civil/mechanical/aerospace/bio-engineering, materials science, physics, or a related field; hands-on experience in mechanical testing, experimental design, instrumentation, and quantitative deformation/fracture measurements; and strong English communication skills. Experience with DIC, particle tracking, high-speed imaging, or optical microscopy is highly desirable. A commitment to open and reproducible research is expected.
Application: submit a CV, publication list, brief research statement, and two references through the online portal only. Questions about the position may be directed to Prof. David Kammer at [email protected]. The start date is flexible, ideally as soon as possible.
