About this position
University of Jyväskylä, Department of Physics, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in experimental nuclear astrophysics for a fixed-term 2-year appointment starting in January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
The work will be carried out in the newly established Centre of Excellence in Neutron-Star Physics 2026–2033, funded by the Research Council of Finland, and within the Exotic Nuclei and Beams (IGISOL) group led by Academy Professor Anu Kankainen. The research environment focuses on nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, neutrino physics, and fundamental interactions, with experiments at the JYFL Accelerator Laboratory and IGISOL facility.
The postdoctoral researcher will perform atomic mass measurements using the JYFLTRAP Penning trap and/or MR-ToF-MS, contribute to instrument development, participate in radioactive-ion-beam experiments, present results at conferences, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and supervise students and summer trainees.
Required background includes a completed PhD in nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, or a related field; experience with ion trapping and charged-particle manipulation; mass spectrometry experience (preferably Penning trap and/or MR-ToF-MS); familiarity with radioactive ion beam production; programming and data analysis skills (e.g. Python); mentoring experience; strong motivation for experimental research; and excellent English communication skills.
Funding and salary: the position is salaried under the Finnish University Salary System, with an estimated gross monthly salary of €3,600–€4,800 depending on qualifications and experience, plus a holiday bonus. The project offers long-term support, research travel resources, and relocation support for candidates moving to Jyväskylä, Finland.
