About this position
The Department of Physics at the University of Jyväskylä is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Doppler and Sympathetic Cooling of Radioactive Ions for the newly funded DopCool project, supported by the Research Council of Finland. The position is hosted at the IGISOL facility within the Accelerator Laboratory in Jyväskylä, Finland, and sits at the intersection of atomic, nuclear and particle physics, laser spectroscopy, ion trapping and ultra-high-precision mass spectrometry.
The project aims to pioneer laser-based cooling techniques for short-lived radioactive ions and to establish a new experimental route for precision mass measurements. The successful candidate will help develop and operate laser systems, optimize a laser-cooling trap built with partners at KU Leuven, integrate the trap with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap mass spectrometer, and perform the first Doppler and sympathetic cooling measurements of stable and radioactive ions. The role also includes simulation work, beam-manipulation device design, experimental participation at IGISOL, and publication and conference presentation of results.
This is a fixed-term postdoctoral appointment starting in November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, initially for 1 year with the possibility of extension by up to 2 additional years. The salary is approximately €3700–€4200 per month gross, depending on qualifications and experience, and a holiday bonus is included. Applicants must have completed their PhD before the start date. Required experience includes experimental atomic, nuclear or particle physics, laser systems, vacuum technology, electronics, data acquisition, scientific programming (e.g. Python), and data analysis. Experience with Doppler/sympathetic cooling, ion trapping, mass spectrometry, laser spectroscopy, and radioactive ion beam production (IGISOL or ISOL) is considered advantageous. Good written and spoken English, strong motivation, and problem-solving ability are essential.
