About this position

Uppsala University is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in experimental robotics and AI for autonomous battery remanufacturing at the Department of Electrical Engineering, in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and the Compel battery initiative.

The project focuses on building an AI-driven, fully automated, flexible robotized solution for direct remanufacturing of Li-ion batteries. The work combines experimental robotics, adaptive manipulation, mechatronics, machine vision, autonomous experimentation, and machine learning in a real laboratory environment. The postdoctoral researcher will help develop an autonomous robotic platform that can manufacture, test, analyze, disassemble, clean, and remanufacture battery cells, with close collaboration between robotics and battery chemistry researchers.

Possible research directions include flexible robotic manipulation of fragile objects, smart autonomous laboratory data/system architecture, vision-based perception and decision-making, adaptation to changing objects and conditions, closed-loop experimentation, and experimental validation of autonomous processes. Previous battery experience is not required, and applicants with strong hands-on experience in robotics, mechatronics, automation, or related physical systems are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: a PhD or equivalent in robotics, mechatronics, automation, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, chemical engineering, engineering physics, or a related field; documented practical experimental experience; hands-on system development/integration/programming/evaluation; and very good English. The role may include up to 20% teaching.

Employment: fixed-term for 24 months, full-time, based in Uppsala, Sweden. Start date is 2026-11-02 or as agreed.

Deadline: 29 October 2026.

How to apply: submit a cover letter, CV, education summary, doctoral certificate and transcripts, thesis, additional documents, referee contacts, and publications through Uppsala University’s recruitment system.

What's required

Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent in robotics, mechatronics, automation, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, chemical engineering, engineering physics, or a similar field by the time of employment decision. Those who earned the PhD within three years before the application deadline are primarily considered, with possible extensions for special circumstances. Required qualifications include documented practical experience in experimental work involving robotics, mechatronics, automation, or closely related areas; hands-on experience developing, integrating, programming, or experimentally evaluating physical systems; and very good oral and written English. Strong collaboration and communication skills, goal orientation, self-drive, structure, problem-solving ability, analytical skills, and willingness to learn are emphasized. Desired merits include industrial robot programming and integration, robot manipulation, machine vision and perception, mechatronics and sensor integration, experimental automation/self-driving labs, machine learning for experimental systems/physical AI, battery chemistry research, and completed academic teacher training.

How to apply

Prepare a cover letter, CV, brief education description, doctoral degree certificate and transcripts, doctoral thesis, any other supporting documents, referee contact details, and publications. Write the application in English and submit it through Uppsala University's recruitment system before the deadline.
