About this position

European Spallation Source (ESS) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow or Research Engineer in Robotics and Computer Vision (reference ESD-82500) to work on the ASTRIND project supporting the BEER instrument.

This role sits at the intersection of robotics, computer vision, mechatronics, automatic control, software engineering, and experimental neutron diffraction. The successful candidate will help design and deploy an automated sample alignment system, including robot/camera architecture, EPICS and NICOS integration, user interfaces, testing, commissioning, validation, and technical documentation. Depending on the appointment, the role may also include research, supervision of master’s students, and publication of results.

The project is part of ASTRIND, a German-Swedish collaboration funded by the Röntgen-Ångström Cluster. It aims to improve strain and texture measurements at ESS’s BEER diffractometer by transferring robotics, vision, and simulation technologies from STRESS-SPEC (MLZ Munich). The work includes multi-view camera tracking, integrated robot and hexapod control, a BEER digital twin, calibration, collision-aware trajectory planning, workflow validation, 3D measurement-point selection, and in-situ digital image correlation.

Eligibility highlights: strong background in robotics, mechatronics, automatic control, computer vision, or a closely related field; either a PhD or an engineering degree with relevant professional experience; strong Python and C/C++ programming; Linux, Git, ROS; CAD and mechanical design experience; and excellent English. Experience with scientific/industrial control systems, machine vision, calibration, motion planning, simulation, digital twins, EPICS, NICOS, or neutron/synchrotron instrumentation is advantageous.

Funding: this is a grant-funded, fixed-term position for three years. ESS states that compensation is individualized and includes monthly pension contributions on top of salary.

Location: ESS. The post explicitly mentions visits to project partners in Munich.

How to apply: submit a CV and motivation letter in English via the ESS website, quoting reference ESD-82500. Direct applications only.
