About this position
Recruitment for a Specially Appointed Researcher (fixed-term, postdoctoral equivalent) at the National Institute of Informatics, in the Shigaki Laboratory, Department of Principles of Informatics, Tokyo, Japan.
The position is part of the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Academic Transformation Areas (B) “Extreme Ability Design Biology”. The project explores how latent adaptive capabilities of living organisms can be understood and manifested through chimerization—combining biological systems with artificial elements to replace or extend body, motor, and sensory functions.
Research themes include body-movement-sensory chimeras, sensorimotor systems in animals, sensors and actuators attached to organisms, electrical stimulation, muscle activity measurement, motion measurement, VR, robot experiments, data analysis, and mathematical modeling. The lab welcomes applicants who can bring their own expertise and help develop new interdisciplinary themes across robotics, neuroscience, biology, biophysics, control engineering, information science, and mathematical science.
Eligibility: doctoral degree completed or expected by appointment; research experience in one or more relevant fields; strong communication skills; willingness to collaborate across disciplines and proactively develop new methods and themes.
Funding: annual income 4–6 million yen; monthly salary 350,000–500,000 yen depending on experience; commuting allowance may be paid if eligible; standard social insurance coverage applies.
Location: Room 401, East Building 9, 1-5-1 Chofugaoka, Chofu City, Tokyo, Japan.
Deadline: applications must arrive by 2026-11-30. Screening is ongoing and the call may close early once a candidate is selected.
How to apply: email the required documents (CV with photo, publication list, research summary and future plans, 2–3 major papers, and two referees’ contact details) to [email protected] with the specified subject line. Portal and agency-website applications are not accepted.
