About this position

Tokyo Metropolitan University’s Kawakami Laboratory in the Graduate School of Urban Environmental Sciences is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher / researcher for an interdisciplinary project on fuel cell electrolyte membranes and automated film deposition processes.

The project supports Japan’s NEDO roadmap for fuel cell performance, durability, and cost toward 2035 and focuses on next-generation membrane materials with high conductivity, high durability, and low cost. Research themes include structural evaluation of novel polymer electrolyte materials, fabrication and characterization of composite electrolyte membranes with nanofiber mats, operation of automated deposition and proton conductivity measurement systems, and data-driven optimization using AI / machine learning and experimental data.

Applicants with backgrounds in polymer chemistry, electrochemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, measurement/process engineering, or related interdisciplinary areas are encouraged to apply. Desired experience includes polymer synthesis, membrane materials, conductivity measurement, gas permeability/diffusion analysis, SEM observation, DMA/DSC/TGA, and materials analysis or prediction using machine learning. Prior battery research experience is not required.

The position is based in Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan at Tokyo Metropolitan University. It is a fixed-term contract role with an annual salary of approximately 4–6 million yen, plus commuting allowance and standard social insurance coverage. The appointment runs until March 31, 2030, with annual renewal subject to review.

To apply, prepare a zip file containing a CV, publication list, research summary, 1–3 major papers, and contact details for two referees. Submit via the JREC-IN Portal web application or by email to [email protected]. Applications are accepted from 2025-12-01 to 2026-12-01, and the search may close early once a suitable candidate is found.
