About this position

Uppsala University is advertising a postdoctoral researcher position in Holocaust and Genocide Studies with a specialization in memory studies and transitional justice in Ethiopia. The post is linked to the project “Transitional Justice Afterlives as Memory Regimes: Tracing the Legacy of the Red Terror Trials in Ethiopia's Current Transitional Justice Process.”

The project examines how earlier transitional justice processes continue to shape later attempts to address violent pasts. Using the concept of memory regimes, it studies the legacy of the Red Terror trials of the 1990s and their influence on contemporary accountability, recognition, and justice efforts in Ethiopia, especially after the 2018 political transition and the 2020–2022 war. The research draws on memory studies, transitional justice, heritage studies, and studies of political violence.

The successful candidate will conduct independent research, including archival and documentary research, qualitative interviews, policy analysis, observation of public forums and consultations, and publication in international peer-reviewed journals. The position also involves participation in seminars and activities at the Uppsala Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (UHGS).

The role is based at Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden, with research stays totaling 24 months at partner institutions: the Center for Peace and Security Studies at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and the Amsterdam School for Heritage, Memory and Material Culture at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Teaching and supervision may be included to a limited extent, up to 20% of working time.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Peace and Development Research or an equivalent degree. Strong candidates will have research experience in memory studies, transitional justice, political violence, mass violence, accountability, or conflict legacies; documented fieldwork in Ethiopia; knowledge of modern Ethiopian political history and transitional justice processes; qualitative research skills; a publication record; excellent English; and excellent Amharic proficiency.

The position is a fixed-term postdoctoral appointment with a fixed monthly salary. The application deadline is 30 October 2026. Applicants should submit a CV, publication list, PhD diploma, up to three selected publications, and a research statement of up to five pages through Uppsala University's recruitment system.
