About this position

The University of Helsinki’s Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in IsoMuseomics (Stable Isotopes). This is a fixed-term position for one year, based in Helsinki, Finland, with additional funding to be sought for an extension.

The successful candidate will join the IsoMuseomics project, an interdisciplinary study that combines genomic data from historical museum specimens (up to 200 years old), stable isotope analyses, and environmental data to investigate the historical dynamics of currently at-risk species. The model system is Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), with a focus on how environmental signals are recorded in historical wing tissues across spatial and temporal scales.

Core tasks include collecting meteorological and phenological time-series data from Finnish open records, building historical climate and environmental reference datasets, analysing stable isotope data (nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen), interpreting isotope patterns in ecological and environmental contexts, and contributing to manuscript writing.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree relevant to the project (such as biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field). Required skills include experience with stable isotope data, independent research ability, strong collaboration and communication skills, and excellent English. Preferred experience includes isotope work in insects, isoscapes or spatial isotope patterns, environmental/climate datasets, and quantitative/statistical analysis in R or similar tools.

The position offers a starting gross monthly salary of approximately 3400–3800 euros depending on qualifications and experience. The postdoctoral researcher should reside in Finland while employed by the University of Helsinki.

Applications must be submitted online by 31 August 2026 at 23:59 EEST. Submit one PDF named lastname_firstname including a motivation letter, CV with publications, contact details of three referees, and a copy of the doctoral degree certificate.
