About this position

This postdoctoral position at Karolinska Institutet offers an exciting opportunity to investigate how metabolism shapes stem cell aging, with a focus on hematopoietic stem cells and their role in tissue regeneration and healthspan extension. The project is funded by Novo Nordisk and the Swedish Research Council Starting Grant, ensuring robust financial support and access to state-of-the-art research facilities. The research will be conducted in the NEO research hub at the Flemingsberg campus, within an international and interdisciplinary environment that encourages collaboration and innovation.

As a member of Dr. Jette Lengefeld’s team, you will explore the metabolic factors driving stem cell aging using advanced techniques such as flow cytometry, RNA/DNA sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, immunofluorescence microscopy, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The lab is part of the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM) and the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, providing access to core facilities for cell sorting, microscopy, sequencing, mouse models, and clinical samples.

The position is full-time, initially for two years with the possibility of extension for up to two additional years. You will benefit from Karolinska Institutet’s collective agreement, which includes state university benefits. The research environment is creative and inspiring, with opportunities to interact with leading scientists across medical and biological disciplines. The university is renowned for its medical research and education, fostering groundbreaking collaborations and a close relationship with healthcare providers.

Applicants must have a PhD in hematology, hematopoietic stem cell biology, aging biology, or a related field, or a foreign degree equivalent to a Swedish PhD. Essential requirements include at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal, strong expertise in working with mice, Laboratory Animal Science certification, excellent English communication skills, strong analytical abilities, and familiarity with data analysis tools. Completion of the doctoral degree within the last three years is advantageous. Desirable skills include hands-on experience with advanced flow cytometry, a background in experimental stem cell biology and hematology, teamwork and communication skills, logical biological thinking, and expertise in R and statistics.

To apply, submit your application via the Varbi recruitment system by 15 May 2026. Required documents include a complete CV (maximum one page), a short publication list, positions held, awards and prizes, and a link to your Google Scholar profile. All documents must be in English. Do not apply via email. For further information, contact Dr. Jette Lengefeld or the HR-Partner Anna Heinerö. Union representatives are also available for support.

This position is ideal for highly motivated researchers seeking to advance their careers in stem cell biology, metabolism, and aging within a world-leading medical university. Join Karolinska Institutet and contribute to better health for all through innovative research.
