Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbiology and Antimicrobial Resistance University of Helsinki in Finland

The University of Helsinki is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Microbiology for the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, on the Viikki campus in Helsinki, Finland.

This fixed-term postdoctoral position runs from January 2027 to December 2028 and is part of the AMaRONE project (Risks and Mitigation of Antimicrobial Resistance Across One Health Sectors), funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across the human-animal-environment interface and combines environmental microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, metagenomics, and One Health approaches.

The successful candidate will join the research group led by University Lecturer Antti Karkman and will have substantial freedom to shape the scientific direction of the work within the project’s broader goals. The research aims to identify novel AMR genes in environmental microbial communities, validate resistance phenotypes and mobility through laboratory experiments, and develop mitigation strategies that integrate computational prediction with experimental validation.

Applicants with expertise in computational microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular microbiology, or a combination of these areas are especially welcome. The role may involve bioinformatic analysis of metagenomic datasets, molecular validation experiments, peer-reviewed publishing, conference presentations, co-supervision of PhD and MSc students, and contributions to new research directions and grant applications.

Eligibility: a doctoral degree in microbiology, bioinformatics, molecular biology, or another relevant life science field is required before employment begins. The post also asks for a strong publication record relative to career stage, independence, teamwork in an international environment, and excellent English communication skills. Experience with AMR, microbial genomics, R/Python, HPC, cloning, and student supervision is an advantage.

Funding and benefits: the position is funded through the AMaRONE project. Salary starts at approximately 3600 euros/month depending on qualifications and experience, plus a performance-based component.
