About this position

Postdoctoral opportunity in France at the Institut Photonique d'Analyse Non-destructive Européen des Matériaux Anciens (IPANEMA), based at the SOLEIL synchrotron in Saint-Aubin, Haute Normandie.

This postdoctoral researcher role supports the PT-Revival project (ANR PRC), coordinated by Arnaud Brayard (Biogeosciences, Dijon). The project investigates the preservation mechanisms and hidden diversity of the Paris Biota, an exceptional Lower Triassic marine ecosystem, using multispectral imaging, hyperspectral photoluminescence imaging, and synchrotron X-ray analysis.

The work combines biological sciences, environmental science, earth science, physics-based imaging, and geochemistry. The successful candidate will develop and optimize imaging protocols, participate in sample preparation, and join measurement campaigns on the PUMA beamline at SOLEIL and in the laboratory. Data analysis will include μXRF, μXAS, segmentation/factorization of hyperspectral cubes, and integration with sedimentological and geochemical datasets.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD or equivalent is required, ideally in materials physics or scientific imaging. Experience with spectral imaging, synchrotron methods, Python/R/HyperSpy, hyperspectral processing, and statistical or machine-learning approaches is preferred. Scientific English is essential; basic French is listed.

The position is full-time, temporary, and starts on 1 Nov 2026. Deadline: 10 Oct 2026. Apply through the CNRS job portal / Euraxess link provided in the post.

What's required

PhD or equivalent is required, specifically a Ph.D. in materials physics or scientific imaging. Proven experience with spectral imaging techniques and/or synchrotron techniques is expected, including tools such as Python, R, and HyperSpy. Experience in hyperspectral data processing (HMSPL, μXRF, μXAS) and statistical analysis (clustering, machine learning) is preferred. Familiarity with fossilization processes and taphonomic biases is an asset. Scientific English proficiency for writing and presentations is essential; basic French is listed.

How to apply

Apply via the CNRS job portal or the Euraxess listing. Use the provided application website link and submit before the deadline.
