The Nuclear Nonproliferation Division at ORNL is seeking a Postdoctoral Nuclear Engineer to conduct research and development in nuclear nonproliferation, reactor physics, modeling and simulation, and reactor analysis. The work includes steady-state and depletion core analysis, fuel cycle analysis, research reactor design and analysis, isotopic characterization of nuclear materials, detector response to radiation sources, safeguards metrics, and conceptual advanced reactor modeling.
This position is based at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA, within the National Security Sciences Directorate at ORNL. The group supports work for the National Nuclear Security Administration, the Department of Energy, and other government agencies, with occasional domestic and international travel.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a Ph.D. in nuclear engineering completed within the last 5 years and must finish all degree requirements before starting. Strong experience with neutron transport and reactor analysis tools such as SCALE, MCNP, OpenMC, Serpent, VERA, or MOOSE is required, along with programming/scripting skills such as Python, C++, Matlab, or JavaScript. Preferred background includes reactor analysis methods development, high-performance computing, SLURM, thermal hydraulics, actinide chemistry, fuel cycle analysis, particle physics, uncertainty quantification, and familiarity with nuclear safeguards and nonproliferation concepts.
