About this position
The Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy at the University of Jyväskylä is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Philosophy for a 3-year fixed-term project appointment beginning on 4 January 2027, or later by mutual agreement.
The position is embedded in Professor Jari Kaukua’s research project Illuminationist Philosophy in the Islamic World (ISHRAQ), funded by the Research Council of Finland. The project investigates the philosophical legacy of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī from the thirteenth to the seventeenth century and aims to build an online database of Illuminationist texts.
The successful candidate will conduct research on the reception of Suhrawardī’s philosophy among fourteenth- and/or fifteenth-century CE philosophical, theological, and/or Sufi authors in the Islamic world. The post is therefore especially suited to scholars with interests in Islamic philosophy, the history of ideas, intellectual history, theology, Sufism, and manuscript-based research.
Applicants must have a completed doctoral degree in philosophy or another suitable field before the start date. A strong command of classical Arabic is required to work with untranslated primary sources, and the ability to work effectively in English is essential. A strong academic record is considered an advantage.
The salary is based on the Finnish University Salary System at task-specific demand level 5 for teaching and research staff, with an estimated gross monthly salary of approximately €3,700–€4,000, depending on qualifications and experience, plus a holiday bonus. The university also notes support for relocation, good working conditions, and a strong international research environment in Jyväskylä, Finland.
