About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Quantum Computing for Fluid Dynamics at ETH Zurich (Zurich, Switzerland).
This fixed-term postdoctoral position sits at the intersection of quantum computing, computational fluid dynamics, high-performance computing, and scientific computing. The project investigates how quantum computers might help simulate turbulent flows beyond the reach of classical methods, with a particular focus on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) and its implementation on future quantum hardware.
The successful candidate will work in the Computational Kinetics Group at ETH Zurich’s D-MAVT, in collaboration with IBM. Research topics include quantum algorithms for fluid dynamics, linearisation approaches such as Kolmogorov, Koopman, and Carleman methods, sparse Hamiltonian methods, block encoding, quantum linear systems algorithms (QLSAs), and hybrid classical–quantum approaches. The role also involves comparing LBM with Navier–Stokes formulations in terms of quantum resource requirements, numerical stability, scalability, and potential quantum advantage for high-Reynolds-number flows.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in computational fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, physics, computer science, quantum computing, or a closely related field; strong expertise in CFD, quantum physics, quantum algorithms, or quantum computing; experience with numerical/computational methods; strong analytical skills; and the ability to work independently and across disciplines. Experience with HPC, scientific programming, and/or quantum-computing frameworks is highly relevant.
Funding and appointment: this is a paid postdoctoral research appointment. The initial contract is for one year, with a possible extension to a second year depending on research progress and project review. No stipend amount is listed.
How to apply: submit your application online only via ETH Zurich’s portal. Include a CV with publication list, a short statement of research experience and motivation, and contact details for two academic referees or reference letters. Applications by email or postal mail will not be considered.
Deadline: 30 November 2026.
