About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in Reactor Engineering for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production at Chosun University in Gwangju, Republic of Korea.

The Heat Transfer Laboratory is recruiting one experimental postdoctoral researcher for a funded project on artificial photosynthesis using microchannel reactors. The role is strongly reactor-focused: the successful candidate will lead the design, fabrication, assembly, troubleshooting, and experimental operation of microchannel or continuous-flow photoreactors, rather than focusing on catalyst synthesis alone.

The project combines reactor development, catalyst integration, and quantitative photocatalytic testing for hydrogen production and potentially CO₂ conversion. The postdoctoral researcher will work with a catalyst-focused colleague while taking responsibility for reactor and flow experimentation, product analysis, calibration, controls, stability testing, data interpretation, and manuscript preparation. The position is intended to support independent research, with a goal of leading first-author journal articles.

Required background: a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Engineering, or near completion with the degree awarded before appointment. Applicants should have substantial hands-on experience personally building and operating reactors or continuous-flow systems, plus direct experience in photocatalytic hydrogen production or water splitting with gas sampling and quantitative product analysis. Strong scientific writing and English communication skills are expected. Candidates whose experience is limited to catalyst synthesis, characterization, or routine activity testing without direct reactor-development responsibility will not be considered.

Preferred experience includes microfluidic or microchannel fabrication, PDMS soft lithography, glass-based devices, precision machining or 3D printing, catalyst immobilization, multiphase flow, gas-tight reactor assembly, automated data acquisition, and CAD or transport modelling.

Terms: one-year initial appointment, with possible renewal by mutual agreement and subject to performance and funding availability. The salary is KRW 3,000,000 per month gross, before taxes and statutory deductions, and conference participation/publication incentives may be supported under applicable university and project rules. The anticipated start date is by mutual agreement, taking into account visa and appointment procedures.

Application deadline: 31 October 2026, 23:59 (Asia/Seoul).

How to apply: Send an English CV and publication list to [email protected]. Clearly identify first-author and shared-first-author papers, and separate original research articles from reviews, book chapters, and unpublished manuscripts. Use the email subject line: Postdoc Application – Reactor Engineering – [Full Name].

What's required

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or be nearing completion in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Engineering, with the degree awarded before appointment begins. Strong hands-on experience designing, building, modifying, assembling, instrumenting, troubleshooting, and operating experimental reactors or continuous-flow systems is required; experience only with operating a commercial batch reactor is not sufficient. Applicants must also have direct experimental experience in photocatalytic hydrogen production or water splitting, including reaction setup, gas sampling, and quantitative product analysis using gas chromatography or another validated method. A strong record of first-author original experimental research papers is required, with clear personal contributions to experiments, data interpretation, and manuscript drafting. Effective English communication and the ability to collaborate while independently managing an individual research project are essential. Candidates with PhDs in Chemistry, Physics, or other non-engineering disciplines, or with experience limited to catalyst synthesis, characterization, or routine activity testing without reactor development responsibility, will not be considered. Preferred experience includes microfluidic or microchannel fabrication, PDMS soft lithography, glass devices, precision machining or 3D printing, catalyst immobilization, multiphase flow, gas-tight reactor assembly, automated data acquisition, and CAD or transport modeling.

How to apply

Prepare an English CV and publication list, clearly marking first-author and shared-first-author papers and separating original research from reviews or other publications. Email the application to [email protected] with the subject line 'Postdoc Application – Reactor Engineering – [Full Name]'.
