About this position

European Spallation Source (ESS) is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Small-Angle Neutron Scattering of Biocompatible Microgels (reference ESD-81647). This 3-year full-time postdoctoral position is centered on small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), soft colloids, microgels, rheology, and molecular simulations.

The project focuses on poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL) microgels for biomedical and soft-matter applications. The researcher will study how microgel architecture, crosslinking, softness, and collective behavior influence deformation, compressibility, and flow response in dense suspensions. The work combines neutron and X-ray scattering, advanced sample environments, and computational modeling to build predictive understanding of soft colloidal systems.

The post is based in Florence, Italy for the first year and Lund, Sweden for the remaining two years. The researcher will work with the ESS LOKI team and collaborate with the University of Florence and Sapienza University of Rome. The project includes synthesis and characterization of microgels, contrast-variation SANS, rheo-SANS/rheo-SAXS, development of a custom 1,2-shear cell, and molecular dynamics/coarse-grained simulations.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field; strong experience with soft colloids; experience at large-scale X-ray and/or neutron facilities; strong English scientific writing and presentation skills; willingness to travel internationally. Desirable skills include Python/Matlab, scattering data analysis, and experience with synthesis and rheological measurements.

Funding: market-competitive, individualized compensation plus monthly pension contributions on top of salary.

How to apply: submit a CV and motivation letter in English via the ESS website. Direct applications only are accepted. Deadline: 2026-10-07.

Funding details

What's required

PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field. Strong experience in the characterisation of soft colloids is required, along with experience using large-scale X-ray and/or neutron facilities and data analysis. Applicants should be able to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams, have strong scientific writing and presentation skills in English with a strong publication record, and be willing and able to travel internationally for collaborative research and beamtime. Desirable: background in small-angle X-ray and/or neutron scattering of soft colloids, programming experience (e.g. Python, Matlab) for data analysis and molecular dynamics/coarse-grained simulations, and experience in synthesis, characterisation, and rheological measurements of soft colloidal systems.

How to apply

Prepare a CV and motivation letter in English and submit them via the ESS website using the apply button. Direct applications only are accepted. Apply as soon as possible and no later than 2026-10-07.
