About this position

PhD opening at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems in Magdeburg, Germany, in the newly established research group Phase Transition Engineering led by Dr. Leif-Thore Deck.

The project is titled “Designing biomolecular crystallization and precipitation processes” and focuses on understanding and engineering how solids form from fluids. The research combines chemical engineering, bioengineering, biomolecular crystallization, precipitation processes, process design, process control, and online monitoring.

The PhD student will help develop a liter-scale precipitation plant, extend it with downstream processing steps such as centrifugation, filtration, and re-dissolution, and support online particle-size monitoring for process optimization. The work will start with model peptides and later move toward active pharmaceutical ingredients, linking fundamental phase-transition science with biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in engineering or natural sciences, preferably in chemical, bio, or process engineering, physics, chemistry, or a related field, with above-average grades. The institute also asks for strong interest in hardware development, good communication and teamwork skills, very good English, and sufficient German. Experience in process design and control is considered an advantage.

The position is full-time, fixed-term for three years, with the possibility of extension. Applications are reviewed continuously until the position is filled. To apply, submit the complete documents through the online application portal, including a motivation letter, CV, certificates, and reference letters.
