About this position

The Institute of Molecular Biology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Synthetic Microbiology (R2) for its Synthetic Microbiology Group in Bratislava, Slovakia.

This postdoctoral position sits at the interface of molecular microbiology, DNA structural biology, synthetic biology, biochemistry, and protein engineering. The project is funded by the IMPULZ programme of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and focuses on the biological function of non-canonical DNA structures, especially G-quadruplexes, and their interactions with cellular proteins in bacteria.

The successful candidate will investigate G-quadruplex-forming sequences in bacterial genomes, identify and characterize proteins that bind G-quadruplex DNA, clone and purify recombinant proteins, and perform biochemical and biophysical studies of protein-DNA interactions. The role also includes constructing genetically modified bacterial strains, studying gene regulation, designing independent research projects, publishing in international peer-reviewed journals, presenting at conferences, and contributing to the supervision of students.

The position is led by Dr. Jan Jamroskovic in the Synthetic Microbiology Group. The institute offers a competitive research environment, modern molecular biology and microbiology facilities, flexible working hours, an additional week of vacation, and support for professional development, conference attendance, and international collaboration.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD or equivalent in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, or a related life science discipline, plus strong English skills and evidence of publication productivity. Experience with molecular cloning, recombinant DNA technologies, protein expression and purification, and bacterial genetics is highly relevant. Familiarity with Prism, OriginLab, R, basic programming, and bioinformatics is advantageous.

The contract is full-time and temporary, with an expected start date of 15 November 2026. The application deadline is 30 October 2026 at 12:00 (Europe/Bratislava). Applicants should email their documents to [email protected] and indicate “Postdoctoral Position” in the subject line.
