About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher in TransRein: transition to reindeer pastoralism at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Sweden.

This postdoctoral position is part of the ERC-funded TransRein project, which studies the profound historical transformation across northern Eurasia from hunting and fishing societies and small reindeer herds to large-scale reindeer herding (reindeer pastoralism) in the early modern period. The project examines this transition through a comparative historical lens, with particular attention to Sámi cultural history, pastoralism, social relations, households, and networks.

The successful candidate will conduct research and academic publishing within the project and may also contribute up to 20% of time to teaching or organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences. The project emphasizes close scientific collaboration, joint development of research questions and methods, and co-authored publications.

Eligibility highlights: a doctoral degree in history or a related field such as anthropology, archaeology, ethnology, or cultural geography; documented research experience in pastoralism and/or knowledge of Sámi cultural history is a merit; interdisciplinary experience linking historical perspectives with natural sciences or ecology is also a merit; excellent English communication skills are required; publication record in international peer-reviewed journals is advantageous. The position is intended for a junior researcher, preferably within three years of the PhD.

Funding and employment: temporary employment for 36 months at 100% scope. No stipend amount is stated. The position is located in Uppsala, Sweden.

Application deadline: 10 November 2026. Apply via the ReachMee portal and include a motivation letter, CV with full publication list, and contact details for two to three referees.
