About this position

Postdoctoral Researcher: Reset Aged Vascular Function at Maastricht University (CARIM / Pathology / FHML / Maastricht UMC+), Netherlands.

This postdoctoral opening is part of an NWO VICI-funded project on vascular ageing, cardiovascular disease, and the role of mesenchymal cells and their metabolism in vascular dysfunction. The project aims to identify and validate therapeutic targets that could reset fibroblast function and/or metabolism to rescue vascular dysfunction in ageing, hypertension, and/or atherosclerosis.

The work combines multi-omics, functional studies, and metabolic analyses across human and murine cells and arteries, with a cross-species RNA and metabolic atlas. The successful candidate will design and perform experiments on cells and tissues, run small animal studies, communicate findings at conferences, supervise BSc/MSc/PhD students, contribute to teaching, and help with grant development. Optional work includes analysis of single-cell sequencing data using R/Seurat or Python.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Biology, Health Sciences, or Medicine; research experience in cardiovascular research and related topics such as vascular ageing, atherosclerosis, or fibroblast metabolism; practical ability in metabolism assays, small animal models, myography, cell culture, and ideally flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, or bioinformatics. Strong English communication skills are required.

Funding and terms: 12-month contract with the prospect of a 12-month extension; gross monthly salary of €3,706–€5,760 (38 hours/week, scale 10.5), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, home office allowance, and other university benefits.

Deadline: 16 November 2026. Applications should include a CV, motivation letter, and reference letter(s) if available.

Supervisor/contact: Prof. Judith Sluimer ([email protected]).
