About this position

National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher in Tokyo, Japan, for research on the efficient functional modification of industrial enzymes.

The project focuses on introducing amino acid mutations into starting proteins to create: (1) proteins with improved stability in harsh solvents such as denaturants, acids, alkalis, and organic solvents; (2) highly active enzymes; and (3) membrane proteins that transport small molecules into cells. The work combines biophysics, bioinformatics, protein engineering, molecular dynamics simulations, and machine learning.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree obtained within the past seven years, and prior employment in the same category must be under five years. The team welcomes candidates from experimental biology, structural biology, information science, and related fields, especially those with programming, statistical analysis, software development, or molecular simulation experience.

This is a fixed-term contract position for one year, renewable based on performance and budget, with a maximum total employment period of five years. The salary is an hourly wage of 2,500–2,700 yen. Benefits include commuting allowance and social insurance coverage. Partial remote work is possible, and online interviews are available for applicants living overseas or far away.

To apply, prepare the required documents: resume, list of achievements, summary of previous research, statement of motivation, and the declaration form. Submit the application by mail to Tomofumi Kameda at AIST in Tokyo. The application window runs from 2026-02-16 to 2026-09-30.
