About this position

The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL) in Braga, Portugal is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Nieder Research Group to work on quantum photonic setup development and application in quantum ion traps and quantum sensing. This is a full-time, 22-month position with a salary range of 37K–40K and a benefits package that includes private health insurance, relocation support, family allowances, tax benefits, and other diplomatic privileges.

The post sits at the interface of physics, photonics, optics, nanophotonics, and quantum sensing. The successful candidate will contribute to custom-built quantum photonic setups at INL and with consortium partners, including work through secondment or remote collaboration. Core duties include FPGA and device control software development, optimisation of experimental setups, and exploration of quantum sensing using colour centres in 2D materials and diamond. The project also involves sensing experiments for temperature and magnetic field, with the possibility of integrating a temperature sensing unit into a quantum ion trap setup developed with collaborators at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

The role is embedded in the QUANTUM_IBER_IA consortium and the broader POCTEP Portugal-Spain cross-border context. The researcher will liaise with collaborators at USC and INL theory groups, support material selection, attend consortium meetings, and help publish results. The advertised keywords include photonics, optics, setup development, nanofabrication, nanophotonics, quantum photonics, and FPGA.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Physics, Physics Engineering, Photonics, or a related field. The experience profile sought includes optical setup development, work with advanced materials such as diamond and 2D materials, and data analysis using Python, Matlab, or similar tools. Preferred experience includes FDTD simulations, ODMR and other quantum photonic sensing principles, and quantum chemistry/modelling/simulations. The team is looking for someone with a hands-on mindset, strong problem-solving skills, the ability to respect deadlines, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.

The application must be submitted in English through the online portal. Candidates need to upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and academic and/or professional diplomas in PDF format. Applications are evaluated first for eligibility, then by CV review, followed by interviews that may be online, onsite, or recorded. The deadline is 23 August 2026 at 23:00 Lisbon time.

INL describes itself as an intergovernmental organisation focused on nanoscience and nanotechnology, offering an international research environment in Braga, Portugal. This vacancy is a strong fit for researchers interested in experimental quantum photonics, lab setup development, sensing applications, and collaborative cross-border research.
