About this position

PhD opening at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in spatiotemporal photonics, metasurfaces, structured light, ultrafast optics, and nanophotonics. The project focuses on frequency-gradient metasurfaces for ultrafast beam steering, temporal focusing, and self-torque generation on femtosecond timescales, with applications in imaging, communication, and photonic information processing.

You will work in the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group at TU/e, developing design strategies for 2D and 3D metasurfaces, modelling electromagnetic/spectral/dispersive response, fabricating nanophotonic structures in cleanroom facilities, and building femtosecond optical experiments. The project is part of SPARK, an EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network with academic and industrial partners across Europe.

Supervision is by Dr. Ahmed H. Dorrah at TU/e, with Prof. Marco Piccardo at INESC MN, Portugal, as co-supervisor. The PhD includes international training and secondments: 6 months at INESC MN in Portugal and 3 months at NKT Photonics in Denmark.

Eligibility and requirements include a Master’s degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Optics/Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; a strong foundation in electromagnetics, optics, and/or photonics; experience with scientific programming or electromagnetic modelling (Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, Lumerical, Tidy3D, or similar); and strong English communication skills. Experience with femtosecond optics, dispersion engineering, nonlinear optics, nanofabrication, or structured-light characterization is beneficial but not mandatory. MSCA mobility and doctoral-degree rules apply.

Funding is a full-time 4-year employment contract with salary scale P (€3,204–€4,051 gross base per month), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, leave, and other TU/e benefits. The position is based in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Apply online through the TU/e Varbi portal. Submit a cover letter, CV with publications and 2–3 references, bachelor’s and master’s transcripts, and a significant publication and/or a one-page MSc thesis description. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is recommended.

What's required

A Master’s degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Optics/Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is required. Applicants should have a strong foundation in electromagnetics, optics, and/or photonics, experience with scientific programming or electromagnetic modelling (e.g. Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, Lumerical, Tidy3D, or similar), and interest or experience in nanophotonics, metasurfaces, structured light, ultrafast optics, nanofabrication, or optical experiments. Strong written and spoken English is required. Experience with femtosecond optics, dispersion engineering, nonlinear optics, nanofabrication, or structured-light characterization is an advantage. MSCA eligibility applies: applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the mobility rule for the Netherlands.

How to apply

Apply online via the TU/e Varbi application button. Submit a cover letter, CV with publications and 2–3 references, bachelor’s and master’s transcripts, and a copy of your most significant publication and/or a one-page MSc thesis description. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so complete applications should be submitted as early as possible.
