About this position

Finnish Centre for Astronomy with ESO (FINCA) at the University of Turku is inviting applications for a three-year postdoctoral researcher / senior researcher fixed-term position in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, and multi-messenger astronomy.

The project is part of the ERC-funded BlackHolistic initiative, which aims to create colour movies of black holes and study their astrophysics across scales. The work focuses on the physics of relativistic jets launched from accreting supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN), with emphasis on developing tools and pipelines to statistically compare astronomical observables such as light curves from numerical simulations against new multi-messenger observations.

You will work closely with the research group of Prof. Sera Markoff (University of Cambridge & University of Amsterdam) and with the FINCA team led by Dr. Talvikki Hovatta and Dr. Elina Lindfors. The Finnish group has several PhD students and postdocs, and the environment spans the University of Turku and Aalto University Metsähovi Radio Observatory.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in astronomy, astrophysics or physics for the postdoctoral role; alternatively, a higher university degree if applying as a senior researcher and in the final stages of the PhD. Applicants should have a strong background in radiative processes and scientific computing, experience in astronomical multi-messenger observations and data analysis, a publication record in high-quality peer-reviewed journals, and strong English communication and presentation skills.

Funding and conditions: This is a salaried fixed-term university position. The starting salary is approximately 3600-3800 EUR/month (collective agreement levels 5-6 plus personal performance component). The contract is for three years, with support available for conference participation and research visits. The selected candidate should start no later than 1 September 2027.

How to apply: Submit the application in English via the University of Turku electronic application form by 6 November 2026 at 16:00 EET. Required attachments include a CV, list of publications, motivation letter (max 2 pages), and degree certificates. At least two recommendation letters must be sent directly to Saija Marjasto.

Work location: The position is physically based in Finland, with the primary work site selectable between the University of Turku and Metsähovi Radio Observatory.
