About this position
Postdoctoral opening at the University of Vienna for astronomical observing programs at the Leopold Figl Observatory, with a strong focus on exoplanets, time-domain science, high-precision photometry, and time-series analysis.
The successful candidate will join the Department of Astrophysics and help build and operate a major observing program for the follow-up and characterization of transiting extrasolar planets. The work includes photometric follow-up of candidates from missions such as TESS and PLATO, false-positive screening, refinement of transit parameters, commissioning of a new wide-field camera system, and development of data reduction and photometry pipelines.
The position is based at the University Observatory in Vienna, Austria, with mostly remote observing from Vienna and occasional work at the telescope on Mitterschöpfl. The role also involves scientific publications, conference presentations, outreach, and the possibility to co-supervise Bachelor and Master students.
Requirements: PhD in astronomy/astrophysics or a closely related field by the start date; experience with optical observations; experience in high-precision photometry and/or time-series analysis; publication record appropriate to career stage; strong Python and astronomical data-processing skills; fluent English; and a category B driver’s license or willingness to obtain one. Helpful extras include exoplanet transit work, telescope operations, instrument commissioning, infrared observations, technical/instrumentation experience, student supervision, outreach, and German.
Funding: fixed-term postdoc contract for 48 months with a gross salary of EUR 5,014.30 (14x/year), subject to adjustment for recognized experience.

A completed PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field by the starting date; experience with optical astronomical observations; experience with high-precision photometry and/or time-series analysis; research experience in observational astronomy evidenced by publications appropriate to career stage; solid programming skills such as Python and experience with astronomical data processing; fluency in spoken and written English; and a category B driver’s license (Austrian or equivalent) or willingness to obtain one before or shortly after starting. Preferred qualifications include exoplanet transit observations and light curve modeling, telescope operations or instrument commissioning, infrared observations, technical or engineering experience with observatory hardware/instrumentation/electronics/mechanics, student supervision and outreach experience, and knowledge of German.
