About this position
Postdoctoral Scholar (ISM) at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky, United States.
This full-time postdoctoral opening is in the Institute for Sustainable Manufacturing and focuses on additive manufacturing, materials science, and mechanical engineering. The project emphasizes solid-state and fusion-based AM methods such as Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD), cold spray, and laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), with a strong interest in process–structure–property relationships.
The successful candidate will work with faculty PI and Co-PIs, in collaboration with research partners at DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and industry. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, developing analytical and numerical models, performing microstructural characterization, analyzing thermal and thermo-mechanical behavior, studying plastic deformation and defect formation, and evaluating residual stress and distortion in large-format applications.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Engineering and have a strong publication record. Helpful experience includes AM technologies, characterization tools such as SEM, TEM, FIB, XRD, nano-indentation, modeling of manufacturing processes, microstructure evolution, phase transformations, defect generation, CAD/CAM, MATLAB, G-Code, and collaborative research experience. Experience with physics-informed or data-driven manufacturing approaches is also welcomed.
The position includes mentoring graduate students, contributing to proposals, publishing in journals, and presenting at conferences. Salary is commensurate with abilities and experience, and funding is renewed yearly based on performance and availability.
Deadline: 2026-12-31. Apply via the University of Kentucky jobs portal.
