About this position

UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business / Institute for Business and Social Impact is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar for a two-year, full-time appointment with possible renewal. The position is centered on applied economics, development, labor, mental health, and closely related fields, with a strong emphasis on rigorous empirical analysis and policy-relevant research.

The successful candidate will work with faculty and researchers at the Institute for Business and Social Impact, including Paul Gertler (Faculty Director) and Laura Chioda (Chief Data Scientist), and will join the broader UC Berkeley research community through seminars and workshops. The role is especially suited to researchers who combine empirical causal inference, econometrics, experimental and quasi-experimental methods, machine learning, and/or work with administrative or large-scale datasets.

Research interests highlighted in the call include development economics, labor markets, mental health measurement and interventions, behavioral economics, and digital or light-touch mental health tools. Applicants with experience designing or overseeing randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and collaborating with NGOs, governments, or industry partners are particularly encouraged.

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) by the start date, or be enrolled in a Ph.D. program at the time of application. Candidates should have no more than three years of post-degree research experience. Preferred backgrounds include economics and related fields, especially applied microeconomics, development, mental health, or behavioral economics.

Funding: This is a salaried postdoctoral employee position. The posted salary range is based on UC academic salary scales, with a current full-time postdoc range of $69,073-$82,836 and a reasonable estimate of $69,073-$77,030. The appointment is funded for two years, with possible renewal.

How to apply: Submit the application through UC Berkeley AP Recruit. Required materials include a CV, cover letter, writing sample (job market paper or dissertation/article-length sample), and a one-page research agenda written in non-technical language. Three to five references are required. The final application deadline is 2026-10-30.

Location: Berkeley, California, United States.
