About this position

University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences, in partnership with the Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean, and Ecosystem Studies (CICOES) and NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar to study the ecological drivers of Southern Resident Killer Whale (SRKW) habitat use.

The project combines environmental DNA (eDNA), oceanographic data, passive acoustic data, and ecological/statistical modeling to improve ecosystem-based assessments of SRKW habitat use and characterize prey communities. The successful candidate will work with fisheries scientists, ecological modelers, and molecular geneticists, and will contribute to bioinformatic workflows, metabarcoding/qPCR analysis, predator-prey distribution mapping, and a unified statistical detection model for killer whales.

This is a full-time postdoctoral position based in Seattle, Washington, United States. The appointment is for 12 months with a possible second year depending on performance and funding. Salary is listed at $6,681–$7,309 per month.

Eligibility highlights: PhD or foreign equivalent in Biology, Molecular Genetics, Fisheries Science, Statistics, or a related field; U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident; clearance to work at NOAA/PMEL; strong molecular genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and programming skills in R/Python; experience with large-scale NGS data and scientific writing/presentations. Preferred experience includes statistical/ecological analyses, metabarcoding, quantitative eDNA, passive acoustic detection, and genomics for fisheries or conservation.
