About this position
Penn State University Park is advertising a Postdoctoral Scholar position in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
The project is part of LATTICE (Layered and Thin Film Technologies with Intelligent Cloud Experimentation), a National Science Foundation programmable cloud laboratory. The research focuses on machine learning for autonomous thin-film materials synthesis, including representation learning for scientific data, multimodal data fusion, and real-time predictive modeling.
The postdoc will develop specialized ML models that help AI systems interpret data from instruments such as atomic force microscopy, reflection high-energy electron diffraction, spectroscopic ellipsometry, and X-ray diffraction. The models will support a multi-agent AI framework for autonomous materials synthesis, interact with robotic systems, and be deployed on edge-computing infrastructure for real-time feedback during deposition.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with a strong research record in applied machine learning, computer vision, and/or scientific data analysis. Preferred experience includes deep learning for image analysis, multimodal or multi-task learning, real-time or edge deployment of ML models, and strong Python programming skills; PyTorch or JAX familiarity is preferred.
Funding and terms: This is a full-time term postdoctoral appointment. Continuation beyond the term depends on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding. Penn State notes a competitive benefits package for full-time employees, including postdoctoral benefits.
How to apply: Current Penn State employees and students must apply internally through Workday. External applicants should use the job posting’s Apply option and complete the external application process. No deadline is listed in the posting.
