About this position
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is advertising a PhD Student in ferroelectric field effect transistors within the Physical Properties of Materials Group in Switzerland.
This project sits at the intersection of materials science, physics, chemistry, and electrical engineering, with a strong focus on functional perovskite oxide thin films, epitaxy, heterostructures, multilayers, device fabrication, and electrical characterization. The successful candidate will work in an international collaboration to establish composition-structure-function relationships for ferroelectric, semiconducting, and metallic materials, and to support the development of high-performance ferroelectric field effect transistor technologies.
Key tasks include growing and characterizing oxide thin films, defining lithographic workflows, processing multilayers into device architectures, benchmarking electrical performance, and supplementing experimental work with band structure computations. The role also includes publishing peer-reviewed articles based on the collected data.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in materials science, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline. Helpful background includes solid state chemistry/physics, semiconductors, ferroelectrics, physical vapor deposition, vacuum infrastructure, computational electronic-structure studies, cleanroom fabrication, and Python. Strong English skills are required; German is an asset.
The position is based at PSI, and the selected candidate will be enrolled in the Doctoral program at ETH Zürich, receiving the PhD title there. Applications must be submitted online by 22 November 2026, and referee addresses must be included.
