The Hill Ocean Climate Lab is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar to lead research on long-term marine ecosystem responses to historical climate change along the California coast. The project centers on sedimentary ancient DNA (sedaDNA) from marine sediment cores, paired with existing paleoproxy records, to reconstruct ancient ecological communities and understand how marine systems responded to past environmental change.
This opportunity sits at the intersection of marine paleoecology, paleoceanography, environmental DNA, metagenomics, bioinformatics, and climate change. The scholar will work with the Hill Lab, the Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences, Bodega Marine Laboratory, and the broader UC Davis research community.
Key responsibilities include isolating and amplifying sedaDNA from sediment cores, running high-throughput sequencing workflows, optimizing ancient DNA protocols in clean-lab environments, analyzing metagenomic or metabarcoding data in R/Python/Bash, integrating genomic data with paleoproxy records, and publishing and presenting results at major conferences.
Eligibility requires a Ph.D. by the start date in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Marine Science, Molecular Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field. Applicants should have experience with DNA extraction from difficult environmental samples, NGS library preparation, strong computational analysis skills, and familiarity with marine paleoecology or paleoproxies. Experience with clean-room work, degraded DNA, publications, and scientific communication is preferred.
